Phonics and Word Recognition
Phonics and word recognition instruction is to help children figure out the alphabetic system of
written English and become comfortable with that system as they become reader. Phonics helps
children learn how to identify rhyming words and to create their own rhymes. Word recognition
permit children to translate the letter or spelling pattern of written words into speech and sound
quickly and automatically so that they can identify words a gain rapid access to their meaning.
Working with kindergarten this is the first step to learning words and sounds. I work with Pre-K
and this is what we begin with introducing letters and sounds and connecting words. I would
play games with matching letters to pictures, large puzzles pieces with letters and picture, and
music game with rhyming words with physical movement. For this lesson we use index cards
with the “at” sound and place consonant letters on another index card with the sound to make
words like bat, cat, and hat etc.
I Do We Do You Do
I Do I will model the sounds “at” and show them how to add consonant letters to make a word. I
would repeat the steps each day until the student show that they have grasp the concept of the
sounds. We Do I will put various consonant letters on a magnetized board and demonstrate
creating “at” words. In the group the students will individually come to the board and crate
another “at” word. You Do the student will demonstrating and understanding of the concept of
coupling the “at” sound with varying consonants in small groups using index cards.
Differentiation
PHONICS AND WORD RECOGNITION

The teacher will use letters and large picture puzzles or print letters to trace with picture for
students who may have hard time relating the sound to the letters. The students will also work
alone with the teacher assisted to give them more time to grasp the concept of letters sounds.
Assessment
The formal assessment I will use is observation to monitor how well the students are grasping the
concept and the what students are having a difficult time understanding it. So, I can find ways to
accommodate students who my need extra help, and find another way to re-teach the concept, so
they can better understand.
