The Health Belief Model and the Transtheoretical Model

The models of health behavior that you study this week are models of individual health behavior. This means that rather than try to describe health behavior processes surrounding how people interact or how communities change behaviors, they seek to describe the health behavior of individuals. The Health Belief Model (HBM) has become one of the most widely used conceptual frameworks in health behavior research. Professionals in the health psychology field use it to explain change and maintenance of health behaviors and as a framework for interventions. The second model you explore, the Transtheoretical Model (TTM), uses stages of change to integrate the processes and principles of change across major theories of intervention.

To prepare for this Discussion, think about the similarities and differences between the Health Belief Model and the Transtheoretical Model and reasons why you might use one or another in specific scenarios.

With these thoughts in mind:

Post by Day 4 a comparison of similarities and differences between the Health Belief Model and the Transtheoretical Model. Provide one scenario in which you might prefer to use one model over the other and explain why that model is appropriate. Support your response with references to the Learning Resources.

Be sure to support your postings and responses with specific references to the Learning Resources.
