Implementation of the IOM Future of Nursing Report
The health care system has been reinvented to provide great safekeeping to the citizens
of the United States. This care is affordable, seamless and adequate which has shown to improve
the lifestyle and health of many. The nursing profession is affected most of all by this because
they are the biggest portion of the medical profession. The health care reform was passed in 2010
and this allowed Americans to have more access to health care so they can improve their health
status and have safer, healthier lives. The health care system also relies on patient-centered care
which includes the growth of the nursing profession and ensuring there still won’t be a shortage
of nurses. The big question is how are nurses the key part of this system and how are they going
to be able to handle the changes and improve the gap between patient care and access to health
insurance?
In 2008, a collaboration was created between the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and
the Institute of Medicine to address the need for more nurses. The purpose of creating this
committee is to analyze the role that nurse play, how there is a shortage, the issues the nurses
face in the workforce and future plans for health care and nursing. They also want to make sure
that patients are receiving the care they require ad need, the delivery of nursing care is adequate
and safe, and creating each setting so they can accommodate the increase amount of nurses but
they can also have ways of improving nursing education and care. (“The Future of Nursing:
Leading Change, Advancing Health,” October 5, 2010)
Nurses are truly important to the health care reform because they are and will continue to
be the ones to help the patients understand their disease and how to manage their health care at
home. Education is the key to health and if someone doesn’t understand their status then they
will stay ill and end up in the hospital more often. The committee wants the nurses to come

together with other healthcare professionals to improve and change the health care system and
how the environments that these professionals work in such as hospitals, home health care,
schools, clinics, facilities that provide care long term and assistance, skilled facilities and
community health care centers. Nurses can prevent errors with patent care such as medical and
medication errors and creating safety first is the idea. (“The Future of Nursing: Leading Change,
Advancing Health,” October 5, 2010)
Nurses and other professionals may require increased education and ways to prepare for
the advancing health care and changes in roles. Due to each state’s rules and regulations and
scope of practice for nurses it is difficult at times to make changes across the board. Nurses
should be able to practice at their full capacity and not have any limitations since they are ones
closest to the patient and providing patient care. (“The Future of Nursing: Leading Change,
Advancing Health,” October 5, 2010)
Policies and planning for the workforce should have better collection of data and better
information collection as well. This is done buy all medical professionals. The recommendations
by the committee are to increase the practice of registered nurses and make them more advanced
since they have the knowledge and education to do this. (“The Future of Nursing: Leading
Change, Advancing Health,” October 5, 2010) Nurses should receive or have more opportunities
to be more leaders to improve quality and safe care. Improve the education level of nurses to
obtain a baccalaureate degree.
The implementation program in the state of Florida’s projected plans are to provide
funding which offers training in leadership for all nurses to prepare them to serve on different
committees and on boards as well. This project will focus on sustaining and improving the
strength of the Florida Action Coalition. The education that is provided is for a diversity of

nurses so they can come together and improve on policies and procedures and safe care. The
infrastructure is based on the knowledge of the nurses and building it is the primary goal.
(“Florida Action Coalition,” 2016)
Two initiatives of the Florida Action Coalition is to advance the nursing profession so
that Floridians can have better access to safe health care and increase the education level of
nurses and keep them educated for life.
In conclusion, nurses are great professionals who want to provide the best care possible
but are sometimes limited due to the current rules and regulations buy the state and federal
government. If all medical professional come together and create a list of changes and then they
can go to Washington to get approval to make changes. Nurses should always paly a frontline
role in any transformation that has to do with healthcare. (“The Future of Nursing: Leading
Change, Advancing Health,”)
