Journal Assignment: Multicultural Awareness
Jean Piaget and Erik Erikson are two prominent psychologists in the field of human growth and development. Erikson’s Stages of Psychosocial Development and Piaget’s Theory of Cognitive Development provide a background for understanding the developmental context of clients. Life-span development theory states that individuals continue to develop from infancy to late adulthood. Therefore, it is important to recognize that each client is in a particular stage of development. For example, if you are working with a 9-year-old client and an 80-year-old client, their current stages of emotional, physical, social, spiritual, and cognitive development would be vastly different. This understanding of the developmental context of your clients is foundational for client conceptualization and choosing appropriate intervention methods.
A client’s cultural background is also critically important. Where your client was born and raised, the cultural beliefs and religious convictions of the client’s family, and the different cultures and beliefs of the communities where the client lived is also fundamental to understanding your client and determining appropriate intervention methods.
While you must be aware of your client’s developmental and socio-cultural context, it is just as important to be aware of your own, with its biases and beliefs, so that your client conceptualization is not influenced by a lack of self-awareness. Participating in self-assessment can help counselors gain an understanding of who they are, what they believe, and how to separate personal biases from the counseling process.
For this Journal Assignment, you will assess your multicultural awareness and cultural competence, and consider the importance of multicultural awareness and cultural competence to the practice of clinical mental health counseling.
Due to the somewhat abstract topic of this Assignment, you are asked to present your thoughts as a reflective journal entry. Regular reflection through journaling is a common practice for counselors, and both counseling students and professionals find the practice helpful to their self-awareness and professional growth (Woodbridge & Rust O’Beirne, 2017).
Note that this Assignment is assessed according to the criteria in the assignment rubric with the exception of APA format. While you need to support your assignment with specific references to all resources used in its preparation, Journals are intended to be informal. APA format is not expected in journal assignments.

I have attached the pdf of my “Multi Cultural Self Assessment” test as a pdf. I have
answered Part II. Below (just in my own words – nothing scholarly, but will give you an idea
of who I am) .
Part II. Now look back at your responses in the context of your classroom interactions. Is your
behavior different in that setting than in your day-to-day encounters?
Yes, my behaviour within the classroom and my general attitude to my academics is
different. I feel less confident, unsure, and worried. I am dyslexic and noticed that I still carry
a lot of the old childhood thoughts of feeling inferior, which affect my general focus and
approach. I have also found that navigating around the online world of Walden to be initially
daunting and confusing. I feel nervous and unsettled but also willing to work through these
feelings and continue with my chosen path. I feel that I have a lot to offer as a counsellor so
will push through these challenges. I have had great experiences with going to counselors in
the past and I never left a counselors appointing thinking “hey, that was great, I’d like to go
back to this counsellor… because I bet they’re really good at spelling and writing!” 😉
This is only my second class so I believe that as I persevere that things will get better.

Multicultural Self-Assessment
After taking the Multicultural Self-Assessment, discuss your results under this heading.
Discuss your reactions to the assessment: What surprised you? What did you learn? And so on…
I was not surprised to see that I scored high with being very open multiculturally. I was
also not surprised to see how I did not cary the same level of confidence within my academic
world (see my answers to Part II Self assessment).
This is more info than you need about me but thought it might help (below):
Dose the reader want to know that I’m in living in Edinburgh with my 9 yr old son at the
moment? I have overcome a lot of challenging life experiences and feel that I have actually come
out of it to be a better person for it – the reason why I feel called to being a counselor
I was born in nyc USA but grew up traveling internationally so I have a very open mind
of the world. I see how small the world can be and how we are all interconnected. I see the
difference of cultures to be a beautiful thing. I remember things as a child like being in a mud hut
in Africa and the hudge beautiful smile of the children there. I also remember keep food in my
pockets to give to the other children. They seemed pretty excited about oranges. I did it privately,
w just the local children not so

PERSONAL JOURNAL
I remember being in Madera and making friends w a farming family. We did not speak the same
language and communicate w hand gestures and by drawing images in the ground w a stick. I
used to wake up very early to see them as got their mule ready to work the fields.
My father was a US Marine who went onto Advertising for a large American advertising agency
that wanted to expand internationally. I move a lot like a military child, but I did not have a base
of other Americans to live with. I was always integrating into different cultures and class
structures.
As an adult, I have many international friends that have all lived incredibly interesting lives. I
have some European friends that work as research scientist, well-known artists and writers, and
friends that have left their home for a better life like one of my friends from Zimbabwe who lost
half of her family in the massacres. I have two friends that are blind but continue to have lives
full of passion, traveling and dancing the Tango.
First Time I Realized I Was “Other”
Here you will explain the time you first realized that you were different from others.
Influence of Developmental Stage on Experience of “Otherness”
How was your experience of “otherness” influenced by your developmental stage at the
time you experienced it?
The first time I remember feeling “otherness” was when I was a child in kindergarten in
Australia. The teacher asked me to go to another class and ask for a pair of scissors. Everyone
laughed at the way I said, and it made me feel sad and alone, like a weird alien that has just
entered their classroom.

I remember the same feeling on my first day of a new school in England when I was in
elementary school. I asked if I could use the bathroom and it would have been more normal to
have asked for the WC or toilet. Again the whole class laughed at me, and I felt awful. Generally
making friends and settling in was incredibly difficult. I spent a lot of my childhood feeling
alone, sad and inferior.
Action Plan as a Result of the Self-Assessment
After considering the self-assessment and reviewing the text, explain how you plan to
work on this important topic in your own life.
I’m not sure exactly what they are asking here, but I’d say I would benefit from letting go of all
this childhood baggage with how I view the academic world and to remind myself of why I have
chosen this path, and how I owe not just to myself but also to others that would benefit from my
help. So the important topic in my own life right now would be my Master’s degree. Importance
of Multicultural Awareness and Cultural Competency
Under this heading, explain the importance of multicultural awareness and cultural
competency to you as a counselor-in-training. Be sure to cite scholarly references.

Week 8: Multicultural Issues in Counseling
Walden University
COUN 6100: Introduction to Clinical Mental Health Counseling
Imagine that you are in a counseling session with a new client. She is a 24year-old Muslim woman who has lived in the United States for the past 2
years under refugee status. She appears depressed and anxious. Is this a
mental health concern, or is there more to this situation? Is it possible that
her behavior reveals issues of culture, oppression, and racism? How might
her age and stage of development play a part in her overall mental health?
Being aware of multicultural issues that can arise during sessions and
understanding the client’s stages of personal growth and development
provide a wealth of information for you as a clinical mental health counselor.
Understanding these issues will also allow you to gain greater insight into
your own life from a socio-cultural context.
This week, you explore how understanding clients’ stages of human growth
and development and socio-cultural context can impact the practice of
clinical mental health counseling.
Analyze the importance of multicultural awareness
