Assignment #1  Family Literacy Night Plan

I will attach samples

Engaging families in reading activities that help promote at-home reading opportunities and provide support for all students is a critical part of the child’s reading experiences. Reading/Literacy specialists are often tasked with planning schoolwide activities to get families involved in their child’s literacy learning.

Your principal has asked you to assist in planning a schoolwide family literacy night that will provide families with strategies and resources enabling them to become involved in their child’s literacy development.

First, create a 100-250-word flyer that describes the Family Literacy Night, including at least three activities families can expect to participate in at the event.

2 assignments for $100– I will begin working on the other one we did not complete and send you the as much complete info in the document for you to complete standards and instruction and you can critique

Following the flyer, create a 250-500 word handout for families to take home. This will provide them with strategies and resources to support their child’s literacy development at the elementary level.

The handout should include:

Importance of establishing a home-school connection.

Two research-based strategies for each of the five essential components of literacy that can be  implemented at home.

At least two strategies that can be done at home to support writing development.

At least three online resources families can use to support their student’s literacy development at             home.

CLINICAL FIELD EXPERIENCE C
Reading/Literacy Specialist Interview
Since it is the end of the school year and state testing time the reading
specialist has been tasked with pulling virtual students daily in small groups
to complete their South Carolina Ready exam. Today, Monday, May 17th, we
pulled 15 students to test inside her class room. All of these students
required oral administration on the math section. Since I am a certified
teacher and I have received training on how to administer the test, I was
able to read the test directions and proctor with her. Prior to students
coming in, parents were notified of the dates students needed to report in
person to take their state test. Parents also had to option to opt their
students our of completing the test. The day before students reported to
school parents were sent an email along with a phone call about the details
of their students schedule. There was also a post on social media for
parents as well. During the course of a regular school year, she stated that
she would have called her bottom tier students’ parents and scheduled a in
person meeting for them to see first-hand where there students are at, ideas
on how they can assist them at home and a details data print off from
iReady explaining their area/areas of weakness and resources that students
have access to via their MacBook. At the beginning of the school year
parents are given contact information via the English teacher on how to
communicate/contact the reading specialist. As a reading specialist, I
personal love using Remind Me to communicate with parents and well as
have parents provide me with feedback, questions, or concerns. I also plan

to implement parent-centered literacy nights. There are many parents who
lack skills and do not know how to effectively help/assist their children.
Proper preparation can be very successful for our students. Also, hosting
parent-teacher conference along with the reading teachers can also create a
solid partnership with both teachers and parents to provide the needed
instruction for students. At the beginning of the school year while it is
important to build relationships with students, reading specialist must also
build relationships with parents as well. Finally, communicating with
parents more frequently.

LITERACY SPECIALIST INTERVIEW

Literacy Specialist Interview
Family engagement is a critical part of developing strong literacy skills. A child’s earliest
language skills are developed at home and refined at school. When families and schools work
collaboratively, children benefit greatly. Research shows that students will do better in school,
teachers gain high self-esteem, and parents become empowered and more invested in their child’s
education when the home school connection is strong.
During my observation of the literacy specialist, she was preparing for a virtual family
reading night. Her first steps were planning the event and soliciting help to run the break out
rooms. Once this was complete, she began to create communications to advertise the event.
There was a flyer created with a basic overview shared. She shared that all communications are
in English and Spanish due to the school’s population. She also posted the flyer on social media
and the school website. She also shared the flyer via email and asked all teachers to post it in
their google classrooms. She shared that this helps to reach as many families as possible.
A week before the event, she shared a video with families on google classroom and the
school’s website. This helps to build momentum. Forty-eight hours before the event, a robo-call
goes out to all the families to remind them of the event and all the logistical details. She shared
that when school is in session, she would use many of the same strategies but would also
announce it on the morning announcements. She would also share the flyer with parents as they
drop off students at arrival and dismissal.
The literacy specialist used many engagement strategies that I would use in my future
practice. The school that I work at is in a high poverty area and many of the families do not have
access to internet service and limited technology. Therefore, it is important to use multiple forms

of communication to share events with families. I will use the literacy specialist’s strategy of
making a robo-call to share the logistics of the event, this will help to reach families that do not
have access to technology. I will also use her idea to share flyers at arrival and dismissal. This
allows me to speak with families in person and ask any questions they may have about the event.
Finally, I would implement her idea of sharing the flyer in multiple languages. By
communicating with families in their native language, it allows them to understand what to
expect at the event. It also helps them to feel connected and valued by the school.
