For this exam, prepare to respond to any of the essay prompts listed below. It is important to make a mental outline about how you plan to respond to each essay. Each of your essay responses should be three to five paragraphs that demonstrate knowledge of the content and specific examples from the textbook and other material covered in the course.
- Explain the incommunicable and communicable attributes of God. Choose three attributes under each category. Explain how these incommunicable attributes differentiate God from the world.
- What is the importance of understanding the incommunicable and communicable attributes of God? Be sure to include how the incommunicable attributes display God’s infinity and/or perfection compared to the world. Support your answer with relevant Scripture and theological reasoning.
- Why have theologians claimed that human language about God works “analogically”? What does this mean, and how does it contrast with the usual way the language works?
- Explain the attribute of impassibility, why it has been challenged in recent theology, and why Highfield thinks it is worth retaining.
- Explain the concept of God as “pure actuality,” and why it is significant for the characterization of God.
- Would it be correct to say God is the most powerful being in the world? Why or why not?
