PSYC 8754/PSYC 6754: Personnel Psychology in the Workplace
Final Project Guidelines
For your Final Project, you select a topic related to job analysis, competency models,
training and development, or selection. For example, you might write about using job
analysis as a strategic tool for gaining a competitive advantage, developing a
competency model for public sector police officers, examining the faking issue when
using personality tests in high-stakes employment testing, or evaluating factors that
affect transfer of training within multinational organizations. There are certainly many
other possibilities. Please remember to identify a gap in the literature and focus your
topic and research so that your project is not too broad. You begin working on your
Final Project in Week 2 and continue to develop your Final Project throughout the span
of this course. Your Final Project submissions should incorporate all Instructor feedback
from previous submissions throughout the course.
Final Project
8–10 pages of text: Not including title page, abstract, and references
Please use the Template to complete the Final Project. Your Final Project must include
the following elements:
Title page
Abstract
Background
Literature strategy
A literature review using 15–20 articles related to your topic (job analysis,
competency models, training and development, or selection)
Gap(s) in research of personnel psychology
A problem statement using the Final Project Template
Research question(s) and hypotheses based upon the gap(s) in research
A purpose statement using the Final Project Template
You continue to build on your Final Project throughout the course, turning in sections as
specified below:
Week 2: Topic (1–2 pages)
Submit your proposed title and topic. You can change these as you continue your
readings throughout the quarter.
Week 6: Problem Statement (1–2 paragraphs)
You submitted your proposed title and topic in Week 2. Incorporate Instructor feedback
before submitting the problem statement.
Identify and describe a gap in the literature related to your Final Project topic.

Provide a 1–2 paragraph problem statement using the Final Project Template
found in the Week 6 Learning Resources in which the gap you have identified is
described.
Week 8: Research Question and Purpose Statement (2–3 pages)
You submitted your problem statement in Week 6. Incorporate Instructor feedback
before submitting the research question.
Write a purpose statement using the Final Project Template.
Generate research question(s) and a set of hypotheses based upon the gap(s) in
the research that you have identified. Be sure to indicate what constructs you
might measure and how you might measure them. State the hypotheses by using
appropriate population parameters and statistical notation. (Use of an equation
editor makes typing hypotheses easy.)
Week 11: Literature Review and Final Project Submission (8–10 pages of text, not
including title page, abstract, and references)
This week you submit your literature review. You also resubmit your problem statement,
purpose statement, and research question(s) and hypotheses, incorporating your
Instructor feedback and additional research. Your final submission must include the
following elements:
A literature review using 15–20 articles related to your topic (job analysis,
competency models, training and development, or selection). Use the Final
Project Template to organize your review.
Gap(s) in research of personnel psychology
A problem statement using the Final Project Template
A purpose statement using the Final Project Template
Research question(s) and hypotheses based upon the gap(s) in research
Your Final Project must also include a title page and an abstract page and background,
literature strategy, and references sections. It must be based upon scholarly literature
and the Learning Resources presented in this course.
Although the Final Project (8–10 pages) is not due until Day 7 of Week 11, you should
become familiar with the project requirements and have them in mind as you proceed
through the course. Many of the Discussions and Application Assignments relate to and
can be of use in your Final Project.
Information on scholarly writing may be found in the APA Publication Manual (6th ed.),
and at the Walden Writing Center website. Also see the Walden University Guidelines
and Policies located in the online classroom.
